About Abdulla

Abdulla S. Ali is an accomplished academic and educator serving as an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of History and Archaeology within the College of Humanities at the University of Dodoma, Tanzania. His academic journey and professional contributions reflect a deep commitment to historical scholarship, particularly in the areas of African medical, social, and cultural history.

Abdulla’s educational background is robust and diverse. He began his formal education at Ole School, where he completed his primary and middle education from 1981 to 1992. He then advanced to Utaani Secondary School Centre, earning the Certificate of Secondary Education Examination between 1993 and 1994. Continuing his studies, he attended Lumumba Secondary School from 1995 to 1997, where he obtained the Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education. His passion for history and education led him to pursue higher education at the International University of Africa, Khartoum, specifically at the College of Education in Zanzibar, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts with Education from 2005 to 2008. Building on this foundation, Abdulla completed a Master of Arts in History at the University of Dar es Salaam between 2011 and 2015. Currently, since 2019, he is pursuing a PhD at the University of Dodoma, where he continues to advance his research and academic expertise.

Professionally, Abdulla has held several roles that underscore his dedication to education. From 2008 to 2010, he served as an Educational Officer II at Kazima Secondary School in Tabora, under the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training. This role provided him with practical teaching experience in a secondary school setting. In 2010, he joined the University of Dodoma as a Tutorial Assistant, a position he held until 2015, during which he supported academic instruction and student learning. Since 2016, Abdulla has been an Assistant Lecturer at the same institution, where he engages in teaching, mentoring, and research within the Department of History and Archaeology.

Abdulla’s research interests are wide-ranging and focus on critical themes in African history. These include the history of diseases, health and healing, gender history, environmental history, and the history of religions. His scholarly work is exemplified by his M.A. dissertation, completed in 2015 at the University of Dar es Salaam, titled Social Construction of Mental Illness in Colonial Tanganyika: Government Interventions, Popular Perceptions, and Responses, 1920–1960. This work examines the complex interplay of colonial policies, societal attitudes, and responses to mental health in Tanganyika, offering valuable insights into the medical and social history of colonial East Africa.

As an Assistant Lecturer at the University of Dodoma, Abdulla S. Ali continues to contribute to the academic community through teaching and research. His ongoing PhD studies and focused research interests position him as a significant contributor to the understanding of African historical narratives.
